Rigger & Banksman
Introduction
This handout is designed to assist you during the course and as a reference source when at work. You may find it useful as a point of reference or for specific circumstances during your employment as a Rigger, Banksman or Slinger. By using your knowledge and constantly applying it in the workplace, you will find your own aptitude for these tasks continually developing.
Competence
All personnel using mechanical handling lifting equipment must be trained; they must also have a working knowledge of its capabilities and the potential defects that may arise whilst in service. This knowledge will be of the utmost importance when carrying out the pre-use inspection.
Correct Use
The equipment should be used only for the specific purpose for which it is designed and should not be adapted for any other purpose.
A high standard of skill and competence is important for reasons:
| Safety |
The professional operator recognizes his responsibility
for his own safety, and also for the safety of those around him.
| Costs | |
| Apart from the obvious cost of injury, and the cost of | |
| damage to other equipment, it can all be avoided by | |
| applying your knowledge and skills to the task of lifting | |
| operations. |
| Satisfaction | |
| A professional operator / rigger will take pride in doing | |
| any job and also doing it well. |
| Avoiding Accidents |
Far too many accidents occur in the lifting and moving of equipment, but these can be avoided by operators recognising the dangers and by using their knowledge and skills to eliminate or minimize the risk.
Three ways in which you can help these are:
- Working to the lifting plan and toolbox talks
- Keeping all equipment in good condition
- Using the equipment correctly
